January 2009's Featured Artist: Elaine Kazinec of Not2Crafty.com

Meet Laney Jane:

My name is Elaine Kazinec and if I had to describe myself in one sentence I would probably say something like this. I am a fifty two year old easygoing, nature loving, always changing, grandmother of four with many, many interests in life. I am never bored because I’m always busy. I am probably best known for burning everything I cook and for constantly changing things around my house. I am also known for my love of Halloween and holidays in general. My granddaughter recently told me that I am full of childlike wonder which was, I think, a nice way of saying I never really grew up. I have enjoyed making things for as long as I can remember but my interest in crafting began in earnest when my husband and I bought our first home. We were short on cash so I learned to make things instead of buying them. I started with simple projects then worked my way up to more difficult and challenging things. I made a lot of mistakes along the way, and still do, but always look at trashed projects as learning experiences rather than failures. My tastes are always changing but, because we have been living in a log home in the mountains of Tennessee for the past five years, I’ve found myself leaning towards rustic and simple. Who knows what I’ll like tomorrow?

One on One with Laney Jane:

How long have you been creating crafts?

I’ve been crafting for as long as I can remember. I was blessed with a very creative mother so I cut my teeth on it.

From where do you draw your in creativity and inspiration?

Everywhere.  I also have insomnia so I lay awake thinking and come up with lots of ideas.  I also like to decorate for every holiday and I draw a lot of inspiration from this.

In your experience, have you discovered or developed your own tips, tricks, and short cuts to make your creations?

I don’t like anything that is complicated.  I don’t want to make things that take a lot of work and time because I get bored easily and would be inclined to leave projects unfinished. I think a lot of people are like that and that’s why they don’t try crafting. Because of this I have developed a lot of shortcuts and use them all the time.  (This is probably why I’m a terrible cook.)

Was it difficult to cross over into the virtual medium (your blog)?

Yes it was!  Computers are not my friend so it’s been very challenging.  I still feel terrified sometimes but I find that the more I step out and learn new things in computer and internet land, the more confident I feel. The more confident I feel, the more willing I am to try new things.

What are some of your other interests/hobbies?

I have many interests including gardening, hiking, reading, photography and my grandchildren.  I am also an avid ghost hunter and belong to a paranormal group in Atlanta and do investigations with a local group as well.

Do you have any other blogs?

Yes. I started spookycabin.com to share some of the many paranormal photos, evp’s,  and experiences  that happen around our cabin. I’ve been having encounters with spirits for as long as I can remember and this is where my interest in the paranormal comes from.

What are the origins behind your talent for crafts?

My crafting origins came from my mom originally and later in life were further inspired by my children's incredible kindergarten teacher. My husband and I were on a tight budget while we were raising our kids so I learned to be creative on a budget. I love to re-purpose things that other people discard and draw a lot of inspiration from things like that.

How did you come up with the title, Not2Crafty, for your blog?

I think of myself as being marginally talented so the name seemed to fit. I also hoped that it would inspire people to try crafting even if they don’t think they are crafty. That’s another reason why I try to keep things simple and easy.

What is it about Not2Crafty and your craft projects that bring people back repeatedly to your blog?

I think people come back because they want to create fun things for their homes and just need some ideas. I bring my everyday life into my blog.  My granddaughters wanted to do a lemonade stand so I made them one that can be taken apart and stored in a bag and did it as a project. I make new decorations for holidays and do them as projects. I have an “Old Hag Party” for the ladies who live in my area every Halloween so this year I shared a lot of my ideas for the party on my blog.  My home is always evolving and so I’m always creating.

What is the most fun about creating your own crafts?

The most fun is that I always have change around my house. I can enjoy the kinds of crafty things I love but can’t afford to buy. I want my home to reflect who I am and the best way to do that is through crafts and home projects.

What inspiration would you give to the person who wants to do one of your projects for the first time but may be a little hesitant in starting?

I would tell them to start with a smaller project and see how it goes. I have learned that the more I do, the better I get. If your first project doesn’t turn out perfectly don’t give up.  You really would be surprised to find how easy most of these projects are and once you get started you’ll be amazed at the amount of fun you can have crafting.

What are some of the projects that a first timer may want to try when they are first starting?

I would start with some of my holiday projects. I usually keep them simple and inexpensive to make.  I’ll be starting on valentine projects soon and that would be a great time to jump in.  Don’t be afraid to try and feel free to email me with questions if you’re not sure of something in my instructions. Crafting is very relaxing and is the easiest way to make your house a home.

My Review:

My mother likes to do crafts, as well, and Not2Crafty.com was THE blog I showed to her for inspiration, projects, and a way to spend her time as a new retiree. When you first see Not2Crafty, it feels like you've just walked into your own living room, the feel is comfortable and inviting, creating this immediate atmosphere of "Yup, I can do this." Each project is clearly labelled, has a short summary about the project and a list of materials you'll need. I found it fun looking around Not2Crafty at all the projects (did I mention the video tutorial?!), each one is explained through step-by-step instruction, complete with photographs demonstrating the step, and--one of my favorite touches--estimated reading time. Handmade items are the best, if you ask me, and Elaine shows you how to create wonderful holiday gifts and decorations (you've got to check out her Halloween and Christmas projects!), just because gifts, or something special for a family member. Not2Crafty is a great starting point, as well. There's a little creativity in all of us, and here's a great place to stretch your imagination and play for a little while. Why not make your New Year's Resolution to start your first project? Don't let the title fool you, Elaine is very crafty, very creative, and she knows how to make it easy for you to awaken that creative spirit in you. Grab you scissors and your imagination, then go to Not2Crafty.com and see what projects Elaine has lined up. Remember Valentine's Day is approaching!
